UGC-Guidelines for Studying Two Academic Programs Simultaneously
Education in today’s world is evolving, aiming to make learning more engaging, flexible, and comprehensive. The National Education Policy of 2020 emphasizes the need for education to be experiential, holistic, and adaptable, encouraging creative combinations of subjects and fostering critical thinking.
Recognizing the growing demand for higher education and the limitations of traditional pathways, various institutions have introduced Open and Distance Learning (ODL) programs and online education. This has prompted discussions about allowing students to pursue two academic programs simultaneously, aligning with the objectives of the NEP 2020. This letter was issued by the UGC in April 2022. What's the Aim?
The goals here are to help students pursue two academic programs together while considering the following objectives from NEP 2020:
-
Understanding and nurturing each student's unique strengths, encouraging teachers and parents to support their overall growth in both studies and other activities.
-
Breaking down barriers between subjects, activities, and career paths to create a more connected learning experience.
-
Encouraging a well-rounded education that includes various fields like sciences, arts, humanities, and sports, aiming to bring knowledge together.
-
Allowing students to deeply explore their interests while developing values, curiosity, creativity, and a sense of service.
-
Providing a wide range of subjects to create thoughtful, versatile, and imaginative individuals.
-
Equipping students for fulfilling lives and careers, empowering them economically by preparing them for meaningful roles.
UGC Guidelines for two courses selection
-
Students can study two full-time programs in person, as long as the class schedules don’t clash.
-
Students can study two programs: one in person and another through online/distance learning. Or they can take up to two online/distance programs at the same time.
-
If students pursue online/distance programs, they should choose institutions recognized by the UGC/Statutory Council/Government of India for these programs.
-
The rules for degree or diploma programs under these guidelines will be set by the UGC and respective professional councils, where relevant.
-
The guidelines take effect when the UGC announces them. Students already studying two programs before the guidelines won't get any benefits applied to their past studies.
These guidelines are specifically applicable to students pursuing academic programs other than Ph.D. Universities are encouraged to establish mechanisms, through their bodies, to facilitate students in following these guidelines.
The aim is to offer students more flexibility in their educational pursuits while ensuring the quality and credibility of the programs they undertake. These guidelines align with the evolving landscape of education, providing students with diverse opportunities for learning and growth.
